TMC activist dies in police custody, protests erupt

Kolkata: Crowds protested outside a police station in West Bengal's Hoogly district after a Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist died in custody due to alleged torture by police. Relatives of the 30-year-old Kazi Nasiruddin, along with locals surrounded the police station and pelted stones at it.

Police had to resort to lathi-charge and fire tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd. Nasiruddin had been arrested following a spat with the police over a car parking issue.

TMC party workers set up road blockades and threw stones at buses on the Tarakeshwar-Chinsurah route in the Dhaniyakhali area leading to the police action, sources said. They also protested at the Dhaniakhali police station where Nasiruddin died after being taken in around 9:00 pm Friday night, the sources said.

The party workers demanded immediate removal of the Officer-in-Charge, Barun Ghosh alleging that Nasiruddin was beaten to death at the police station. The para-military Rapid Action Force was deployed in the area.

Hooghly Superintendent of Police, Tanmoy Roychowdhury said that Nasiruddin was taken to the police station by a night patrol after finding him in an inebriated state. He said that Nasiruddin's wife Manuja Begum filed an FIR at the police station that her husband, a resident of Jairambati village, was allegedly beaten to death by the police.

He said that the post-mortem report was awaited. A friend of Nasiruddin, Sabir Ali alleged that when he went to the police station last night at around 11:00 pm he found him lying naked with a number of policemen surrounding him who claimed that he had fallen unconscious.

Ali said that Nasiruddin was declared dead when he was taken to hospital. He said that Nasiruddin, who had recently bought a mini-truck, was bringing it back after a religious ceremony and had stopped at a sweet shop when he was picked up by the police. Local Trinamool MLA Assema Patra said that Nasiruddin was a party worker and demanded that his unnatural death be investigated.
