THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It’s the time of the year your inbox gets flooded with e-cards. With Christmas and New Year just round the corner, all you need is to visit one of those umpteen websites and simply press the send button. The lovely greeting card that once used to land on your doorsteps is now nothing but a part of paling nostalgia. But, though many consider sending non-virtual cards passe, there are some who still believe in the ritual of sending greetings via post. “Whatever be the occasion, e-cards are something that dampen the whole spirit involved. The proper greeting cards have a personal touch and they carry with them the warmth of a sense of belonging. Moreover, you feel upbeat thinking that the person took the pain to send you a real card without going for the easier option of a virtual card,” says Sithara, a media professional. For Ranjith K, a teacher, sending greeting cards is a practice he has been following since childhood and he says he enjoys each step of it. “Browsing through the rows of cards looking for the right one, selecting from the bought assortment, posting and waiting for the response - the whole affair is so exciting,” he says. Bhagya, an engineering student, says sending a card with a couple of handwritten lines on it will strengthen your bonds and keep them intact. “Even if you are expecting a card, there will be an element of surprise the moment you get it. Receiving, opening, admiring - each stage has its own delight. E-cards are very lukewarm and if I get an electronic response to my real greeting cards, I feel terrible,” she says. But she also adds that her ‘exclusive’ cards are not for all. “I send them to a select group of friends and relatives, people who are in my close circle,” she says.
