HYDERABAD: A group of Telangana advocates on Monday selected the Buddha statue in the middle of Hussainsagar Lake here to sit on an indefinite hunger strike to send an appeal to the youth all over the region not to resort to suicides. For four hours there was a high drama with the police trying to evict them from the place and the demonstrators resisting and even threatening the police with dire consequences if they were forcibly evicted.Nearly 20 advocates reached the Lumbini Park around 11.30 am and boarded a tourism boat along with other tourists and visitors. But on reaching the statue, they sprang a surprise on others by declaring that they would sit on a fast-unto-death at the very place."We want to appeal to Telangana activists to desist from committing suicide,’’ Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee (TAJAC) convenor T Sriranga Rao said. The advocates also demanded that elected representatives from Telangana resign and participate in the Samme.Police and mediapersons reached the place soon and stopped the boat service to the Buddha statue to prevent any trouble. As the police tried to reach the place, the advocates warned them of dire consequences and started talking with the police over cellphones.Meanwhile, Task Force sleuths and Central Zone police went in boats from the Eat Street side of the lake and rounded up the protesters. After a little resistance, the advocates were forcibly shifted into the waiting boats and taken to the shore and from there to Kanchanbagh police station.
