VIJAYAWADA: Amidst high drama, the police arrested district TDP president and Mylavaram MLA Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao on Saturday morning for ‘attacking’ secondary education minister Kolusu Parthasarathi’s car and obstructing the second phase of Rachabanda programme at Reddygudem on Friday. When the MLA was produced before the magistrate of Mylavaram, he was remanded for 18 days. However, the MLA was released on bail after furnishing a personal surety of `10,000.The police registered a case against Uma and 10 TDP activists for attacking the minister’s car and obstructing Rachchabanda. The police went to Uma’s house at Gollapudi at 7 a.m to arrest him.But the MLA did not come out of his house till 10 am.Meanwhile, TDP activists from across Krishna district, including MLA Tangirala Prabhakara Rao, MLC YB Rajendraprasad, TDP state secretary Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, thronged the place to prevent the police from arresting Uma.When Uma came out of his house, the police arrested him despite protests by TDP activists.Tension prevailed at the MLA’s house for sometime.Later, speaking to newsmen, Uma alleged that the Congress government was trying to suppress people’s protests. The MLA said he and other TDP activists were held though they staged a protest in a democratic manner at the Rachchabanda programme. They demanded release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar canal as paddy crop in several mandals in west Krishna was withering.Parthasarathi and MP Lagadapati Rajagopal had failed to safeguard the interests of farmers.Half a dozen farmers committed suicide during the last one month unable to bear the crop loss due to non-release of water, he said.Condemning the TDP attack, Parthasarathi said Uma who lacked commitment to solve farmers’ problems, tried to obstruct his Rachabanda meeting for political mileage.Though the MLA was given a chance to air his grievances during the meeting, he did not raise any farmers’ issues, the minister said.
