New Delhi: It's been 12 years of detention for pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi by the Military Junta in Myanmar.

Her supporters are expected to gather outside Chinese embassies in several major cities of the country later on Wednesday as part of worldwide protests to mark the 12 years of her detention.

Sixty-two-year-old Suu Kyi has spent 12 of the past 18 years in detention. She has been confined to her house in Yangon with no communication with the outside world, except ocassionally that too with official permission.

Pro-democracy supporters in Myanmar, especially the Buddhist monks, have given fresh calls for her release.

The human rights group, Amnesty International has also renewed its appeals for Suu Kyi's unconditional release.
