New Delhi: Delhi High Court ordering to put a stop on interviewing children and their parents for nursery admissions on Thursday, put schools in the capital in a tight spot.
Many principals refrained from directly criticising the judgement, saying they were also not in favour of interviews.
They however, said that some sort of screening method was needed for selection and to gain a fair idea as to whether the child and the school were suited to each other.
They also favoured a lottery system for selection in view of the large number of applications they receive for a very limited number of seats.
"We also believe that there should be no interviews, but some kind of an interaction cannot be ruled out as after all the child has to with us for 14 years," principal of Lakshman Public School Usha Ram said.
However, N O Scaria of Army School felt that the order should be taken in the right spirit.
A fair amount of interaction was needed to understand the expectations of parents from the school as different schools have different profiles, was what Bharati Sharma of Amity Publiic School opined.
"Some schools concentrate on purely academic interests, whereas some institutions put a lot of stress on personality development. The parents need to know about all these details," she added.
She also said that the High Court judgement was reasonable, but it has to be qualified further.
"It has to go into details because we have to find a transparent screening process for selection. We receive around 3,500 applications for 120 seats,” she added.
However, the judgement was welcomed by several other principals, as they felt that the children should not be harassed, where admissions were concerned.
