HYDERABAD: Though the city has recorded a downward trend in the number of murders, robberies and dacoities till October, cases of chain snatching are still worrying police officials. Police said with many criminal gangs out of prison, there has been an increase in snatching and efforts are on to control the menace."Separate teams have been formed to round up gangs which are out of prison and we suspect they are the ones committing the offences," city police commissioner AK Khan said, while announcing the arrest of property offenders in the city on Thursday. During the last year, we arrested nearly 14 gangs. After three to four months they are coming out and our suspicion is they are once again indulging in offences, Khan said. Two teams have been formed and two important gangs have been rounded up. Police also released a poster with 24 active members of such gangs and they will be pasted in crimeprone areas.Replying to another question on reasons for failure to control the offences, Khan said the entire detective department, right from additional commissioner of police and other officers had to be diverted to law and order duties in view of the 42day period of the Sakala Janula Samme. "After working for 1415 hours on bandobust, they were not able to do crime related work," he said. Meanwhile, the police commissioner said the Central Crime Station sleuths had arrested four gangs of property offenders and recovered total property worth Rs 71 lakh including 80 tola gold, six kg silver, 31 vehicles and Rs 1 lakh cash.
