Bangalore: Governor H R Bhardwaj on Thursday called upon the Gandhi Bhavan authorities to formulate a programme to disseminate message of Gandhian philosophy to younger generation. Speaking at a programme ‘Quit India Movement-A Memory’ organised by Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi and Matrubhumi Shanti Prathisthana, he said, “There is a need to launch a movement to revive Gandhi’s principle of unity. Youths are attracted toward Westernisation. Caste wars and linguistic problems are happening in a big way and the recent incident at Mangalore was really disturbing.”
He added, “I will request the universities and the colleges to keep the Gandhian system of education in memory. An award should be instituted and those students who imbibe and implement Gandhian principles should be honoured with the award every year,” he observed. Pointing out that Gandhiji’s dream of ‘Gram Swaraj’ is yet to become a reality, Bhardwaj said that all those with power and responsibility should strive to make Gandhiji’s dream a reality.
Chairman of the Legislative Council D H Shankar Murthy recalled the Mangalore incident and said that he had thought of ‘covering’ the photo of Gandhi at the Council when members defended that consumption of alcohol, and being semi-nude were ‘not wrong’.
Bahuroopi Gandhi, Kannada translation of Anu Bandopadhyaya’s book, was distributed freely to the students on the occasion. Khadi activist V T Huded was felicitated with Sardar Venkata Ramaiah Award and Sarvodaya activist Narayana Bhat was honoured with Narasimhadabade Endowment Award.
