Kolkata: Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday stepped in to bail out some of the passengers stranded due to the ongoing Air India pilots' strike.

She arranged for special trains on various routes and asked Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy to run an additional service of the Shipping Corporation of India on Wednesday to bring back the air passengers stranded in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

As the Air India pilots' strike entered the fourth day, Banerjee said the railways will run special trains from Wednesday to carry the air passengers from Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore to their respective destinations.

The Railways Minister said additional coaches could also be tagged on to superfast trains to carry the passengers.

Banerjee said she had also ordered opening special railways booking counters in each of the five metros.

Initially, the special trains will run for a day or two, but the services could be extended depending upon the situation.
