Sidhu has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict of the Punjab and Haryana High.

New Delhi: Former cricketer-turned-MP and television star Navjot Singh Sidhu has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which found him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder for the death of Gurnam Singh in Patiala on December 27, 1988.

The high court, while convicting him in the case on December 2, had sentenced Sidhu to three years in prison and slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh, but suspended the sentence till January 31, to enable him to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court.

He can also contest elections during this period. Extending similar relief, the court also sentenced Sidhu's co-accused in the case, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, to three years' rigorous imprisonment.

Subsequently, Sidhu has resigned as a BJP MP from Amritsar, but hinted that he would remain in politics and campaign during the Punjab Assembly elections in February.

While convicting them, the High Court had overturned a lower court’s 1999 order acquitting both the accused in the case. Both of them have been directed to furnish a bail bond on or before December 8.

Sidhu and Sandhu allegedly beat up one Gurnam Singh in Patiala on December 27, 1988. Gurnam later died.
