New Delhi: Angry over the fact that a Facebook page maligned Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday, according to a report in The New York Times, asked internet companies and social media sites like Facebook to screen user content and remove disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content before it goes online.
Top officials from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook were scheduled to meet Sibal, two executives of internet companies told The New York Times.
Showing the Facebook page that maligned the Congress President, Sibal earlier told the executives from internet companies and social media sites at a meeting that 'this is unacceptable'.
The report also said that Sibal wants the IT companies to use human beings to screen content and not technology, a demand the companies say is impossible to meet, given the volume of user-generated content coming from India, and that they cannot be responsible for determining what is and isn't defamatory or disparaging.
"If there's a law and there's a court order, we can follow up on it," an executive from one of the companies attending the meeting told The New York Times. But these companies can't be in the business of deciding what is and isn't legal to post, he said.
