KOLLAM: SFI workers on Friday smashed the windowpanes and damaged the office room of the principal of Vimala Hridaya HSS here in protest against the punishment meted out to a seventh standard student by a teacher on Thursday. According to the East Police, the girl student was beaten up by a teacher for allegedly stealing Rs 10 from a classmate’s bag. It was also claimed that a Rs 10  currency note was found from the girl’s bag.  The parents of the student, whose body bore rashes and bruises of beating, came to the school and complained about the incident.  They claimed that their child was innocent and that some other students might have played a trick to put the blame on the girl. As the issue heated up, KSU workers took out a march to the school. Later, a group of SFI workers came to the school and vandalised the principal’s office of the High Secondary School. Meanwhile, the DEO visited the school and inquired about the matter.  It is learnt that action would be initiated against the erring teacher.  The police have registered a case under non-bailable offences against 16 SFI workers following the school authorities’ complaint.
