Chicago: Seven teenagers were injured, three of them critically, when gunmen opened fire at a bus stop near a school in the US city of Detroit, police said on Wednesday.
The attackers, with their faces covered, came in a green minivan and got down at the bus station near the Cody Ninth Grade Academy. At least five of the injured were returning home after taking summer classes in the school.
"Two perpetrators, possibly three, pulled up in a vehicle, exited their vehicle with weapons, asked for a person by name and then opened fire onto the crowd," Police Chief Roderick Grimes was quoted as saying by the local media.
The shooters covered their faces with either masks or T-shirts, police said.
Three of the teens, all of whom are between the ages of 14 and 17, are in a critical condition, police said.
Tuesday's shooting was the second in as many weeks near a Detroit school. Earlier on June 18, a 16-year-old girl was shot during a clash between two groups of teens in Denby High.
Police say they still do not have a motive for the crime. The Detroit News reported that one of the men said, "You know who we're looking for," before firing 15 rounds at the group. Some reports also suggested that the shooting may have stemmed from a fight that broke out in the school on Monday.
The school's principal Jonathan Matthews said there were no problems earlier in the day. "It was a normal day at school. There was nothing that happened (out of the ordinary)," he told the Detroit News.
