KOCHI: The green cover over south India will go up considerably when 40 lakh saplings will be planted in the region, with Kerala having a share of 1.5 lakh including 2,500 for Ernakulam district, on a single day to create a world record on Thursday.The saplings will be planted in six hours starting from 10 am to 4 pm on Thursday to beat the record created by 3,000 students in Chandigarh who planted 37.5 lakh saplings in eight hours.The saplings will be planted in the south multiple spread across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other areas, Dr Nalinaksh Prabhu, president, Lions Club, Kochi, said. About 1.5 lakh saplings will be planted across the state, he said.The event is being organised to create an awareness on the need to protect the environment in the wake of increasing global warming, depletion of ground water level and the like, he said. The event will coincide with the visit of the club’s international president Wing Kun Tam to Chennai on August 25 and Thiruvanthapuram on August 26.The saplings of assorted plants including teak and mahagony will be planted during the campaign. Industrialist R Ramasamy, the club’s past international director, has been entrusted to execute the scheme.It is in the process of identifying hospitals, schools, churches, temples and cemeteries for planting the saplings. There are three major problems in carrying out task. This includes procurement, planting and protection. The third one is the most difficult. The help of schoolchildren has to be sought to achieve the target, he said.
