Part of Yugoslavia until 2003, Serbia and Montenegro advanced to the semi-finals of the 1930 FIFA World Cup only to be routed 6-1 by hosts and eventual champions Uruguay.
At their last appearence in the fials at France 1998, they were ousted in the second round by the Netherlands.
Ilija Petkovic was appointed the coach of Serbia and Montenegro in June 2003 after the team lost to Azerbaijan in the preliminary stage of UEFA Euro 2004.
Under the tutelage of Petkovic the national team known as Plavi, or the Blues, have not lost a competitive fixture.
Having Europe's best defense is the strong point of Serbia and Montenegro, which let in just one goal in their 10 qualifiers.
Their star names include Kezman, Dejan Stankovic, Savo Milosevic, Dragoslav Jevric and skipper Mladen Krstajic.
However, their coach has an unusual grouse.
"People seem to have problems pronouncing the name of our country," Petkovic said.
