The Kerala High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of the accused in the Satnam Singh custodial death case.
Justice P Bhavadasan dismissed the bail pleas of the two accused, first grade assistant Anil Kumar, and jail warden Vivekanandan. The court said that the petitioners were not justified in beating up Satnam.
“The identification of the persons involved in the incident is yet to be conducted. The case diary shows that when Satnam was taken from the General Hospital to the Mental Health Centre, he had not suffered any injuries,” the court said. It is also observed that the accused had a major role in the incident. The team probing the case is yet to inquire into the role played by each of the accused.
Hence, the petitioners cannot be granted bail, the court held. The state government had submitted before the court that the death was owing to the injuries on the youth’s head and neck within a span of twenty-four hours. The incident happened after he was admitted to the mental health centre. Satnam and an another inmate at the hospital had been fighting with each other. Seeing the altercation between the two inmates, two members of the hospital staff and four working patients entered the cell with insulated plastic cable, lock and stick.
