Amritsar: Indian death row convict Sarabjit Singh, who will move a fresh mercy petition before Pakistan government, on Monday appealed to the Centre to release all prisoners of the neighbouring country to bolster diplomatic ties with Islamabad.
Singh, lodged in a Lahore's Kotlakhpat Jail, also made a similar request through his Pakistani lawyer Owais Sheikh to Pakistan Government to free Indian prisoners in that country, his sister Dalbir Kaur said quoting the advocate.
Singh appealed to the Indian Government to release all Pakistani prisoners lodged in the country as 'this step would be helpful for better relations between the neighbouring nation.'
Sheikh would file a fresh mercy petition before the Supreme Court of Pakistan and President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday.
Singh, convicted for his alleged involvement in blasts there, also asked the Indian Government to take up the matter of his clemency with Islamabad as he was "innocent", Kaur said.
She said the lawyer told her that her brother was in good health.
He was accused as an Indian spy and was charged with plotting the 1989 bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan, that killed 14 people and was arrested in 1990. He was tried by several courts and awarded death penalty.
On March 9, 2006, the Supreme Court had dismissed his mercy petition and he was set to be hanged on April 1, 2008. However, the execution was deferred after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sought to examine the issue.
