TIRUPUR: In a daring incident, a gang burgled a jewellery shop here on Monday night looting about 38 kg of gold jewellery (as much as 4,750 sovereigns) worth nearly Rs 10 crore.According to police sources, jewellery shop Alukkas on Kumaran Road in front of Tirupur North police station was closed at 9 pm on Monday. At midnight, a gang gained entry into the UPS room at the rear of the shop by breaking open the iron grill using a gas welding machine and entered the shop. Commenting on the incident, District SP V Balakrishnan said, “Totally, 38 kg jewellery from the showcases was stolen and it includes 2 kg diamond jewellery. The total closing stock of jewellery was 65 kg as on Monday night. Of this, 38 kg was stolen, while the 25 kg in the locker was safe.” He added, “As the CCTV was switched off during the night, nothing was recorded.”Manager Raju Mohan, who opened the shop at 10 am on Tuesday found the jewels missing and informed the police. Though two watchmen were on duty in front of the shop during the night, they were apparently unaware of the incident. Special police teams began the probe by questioning the shop staff and a trio from Madurai, engaged in  repairing air conditioners for the past three days in the shop. Tirupur North police have registered a case.
