The Tamil Nadu government has issued orders for the release of a sum of Rs 84.90 crore from the Environment Protection and Renewable Energy Fund (EPREF) for the implementation of an array of projects, including the relaying of roads using plastic waste.

The orders have been issued keeping in line with various announcements made by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and also proposals made in the State budget.

According to the order, the government had announced during the budget session that relaying of roads using plastic would continue for the year 2012-2013 and it would be implemented at a total cost of Rs 100 crore.

Accordingly, necessary funds were provided.

In view of implementing this proposal, a total of Rs 84.20 crore had been currently released. This apart, other proposals for which funds have been allocated through the order include the constitution of a committee, at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, with retired officials for inspecting roads already laid during 2011-2012 and also monitoring laying of roads and allied activities in future, and launching of incentive rewards for active participation in reducing plastic usage at a cost of Rs 60 lakh.

The order said that the government had also directed that the laying of plastic roads might be carried out by local bodies using their own funds from 2013-2014.

This was proposed so that the funds from the Environment Protection and Renewable Energy Fund could be utilised exclusively for activities that would improve the delicate eco-system or those that would tackle climate change.
