4 waterbodies in Arakkonam, Arcot blocks to get a facelift under RIDF, funded by NABARD

Four traditional ponds in Arakkonam and Arcot revenue blocks in Vellore district will get a facelift under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) of the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD), at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore. 

The Town Panchayat Department had received Rs 97 lakh under RIDF tranche XVIII to rejuvenate Appankarakulam near Arulmigu Lakshmi Narasimhar Temple, in Sholinghur. It would be developed into a recreation spot with a park, walk path and seating facilities for the public and devotees coming to the temple. Apart from this, the department had also received Rs 1.23 crore for the improvement of three other ponds -- Perumal koil kulam in Kalavai, Theppa kulam in Timiri and Thiru kulam in Sholinghur, under the scheme in the district.The scheme is aimed at rejuvenating the water bodies and promoting rain water harvesting to augment the ground water level. “We received the fund a week ago. The tenders have been floated for the work.

The fund will be utilised to desilt, deepen and strengthen the ponds, as well as to create smaller ponds. The time limit for completion of the work is six months,” said assistant director of Town Panchayats of Vellore Zone, S M Malaiyaman Thirumudikari.

Recreation facilities such as park with evergreen trees, footpath and lightening facilities would be set up.

Construction of revetment inside the pond and inlet and outlet weir of the pond would also be the main components of the project in Appankara kulam. “The footpath along Appankara Kulam will be laid at a cost of Rs 33.2 lakh, planting of saplings and creating a small park will be carried out at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. Lighting facilities will also be set up along the four sides of the pond to facilitate the public to enjoy their leisure time,” said the AD.

Desilting, deepening, strengthening and constructing of baby ponds in Perumal kulam, Theepa kulam and Thiru kulam would be taken up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 43 lakh and Rs 30 lakh, respectively, he added.
