NEW DELHI: As the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, K Rosaiah had reportedly ignored open threats from the Left-extremists active in the state and had even broken security cordons around him once or twice. But as governor of Tamil Nadu, he seems to have developed cold feet all because of a ‘perceived threat’ from the same source. No sooner did minister of state for home Jitendra Singh tell Parliament that the Naxals were making forays into Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu under the supervision of the South West Regional Bureau of CPI (Maoists), Rosaiah’s security team at the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan went into high-alert mode.On Saturday, the governor’s ADC sent a request to the state police authority as well as the home ministry to get Rosaiah’s security cover upgraded. The governor currently enjoys Z-plus category but he finds it inadequate in the current scenario. The governor’s team is particularly keen that he be given multi-layered VVIP security cover when he is touring the state or stepping outside Chennai. More than the request for “tighter security” cover, what’s interesting is the reason why the governor is suddenly feeling vulnerable - the current political situation in Andhra Pradesh. With the Andhra police and allied security infrastructure rather busy with tackling the fall-out of the arrest of Jagan Mohan Reddy amid crucial by-elections, there’s a fear that the Naxals in the state are having a free run. Add to this the recent heightened Maoist activities in Odisha, one can fathom why Rosaiah’s security team is in a tizzy.
