KOCHI: A group of residents from Vyttila and Petta on Thursday obstructed two officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) for allegedly including more area in the survey carried out for widening the Vyttila-Petta road. PWD Assistant Engineer Anuroop and Overseer Joy were held captive on the road from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm as they had allegedly marked the area for widening the road to 30 metres as opposed to the proposed 26 metres. The decision to widen the road to 26 meters was made at a meeting held by District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, Benny Behanan MLA, and other representatives on January 2.However, the PWD officials had conducted the survey neglecting this decision. The locals did not free the officials even after the police, led by CI Francis Shelby and Panangad SI Vipin, intervened. The officials were released only after Additional District Magistrate E K Sujatha asked the PWD to stop the survey. Meanwhile, the Joint Action Council has decided to hold a protest march to the Metro Rail office on January 18.
