NAGERCOIL: A 32-year-old woman, who underwent a family planning operation at a private hospital in Nagercoil, died under suspicious circumstances after the surgery on Saturday.Shymala, wife of Jegan (36) and residing at North Street in Pallam, a fishermen hamlet, had two children aged between 9 and 5.Meanwhile, Shymala underwent a family planning operation at a private hospital in Punnai Nagar near Ramanputhoor in the town on October 15. After the surgery, at around 8.30 pm, the hospital administration informed Shymala’s relatives that she had died. On hearing this, Shymala’s relatives staged a road roko on the Nagercoil-Konam Road, saying that she had died due to the negligence of the doctors. Meanwhile, her relatives and neighbours from Pallam thronged the hospital and participated in the road roko.A large posse of police led by Nagercoil town Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhaskaran reached the spot and held talks with Shymala’s relatives, who wanted the police to file a case against the doctors and refused to end their road roko, which lasted till around 3 am on Sunday. As the situation worsened, a unit of striking force police personnel was called and the police assured to register a case against the hospital. After this assurance, the agitating people ended their road roko and dispersed from the spot.On Sunday, the postmortem was performed at Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Aasaripallam and the whole proceedings were videographed. The Nesamony Nagar police have registered a case as ‘Suspicious Death under Section CrPC 174 against the private hospital and started investigation.
