BANGALORE: Aiming at increasing the spirit of recycling, creating awareness, improving economic opportunities for local waste pickers and scrap traders, calculating carbon footprint and inculcating a habit of waste minimization through the practice of the three R’s - reduce, reuse and recycle among schools, colleges and corporate campuses, Radio Active, the Community Radio of Jain Group of Institutions is organising ‘Recyclathon awards 2011’.The event forms part of the ‘Bengaluru Recycling Habba, 2011’ organised The Solid Waste Management Round Table Bengaluru ( SWMRT), supported by Karnataka state pollution control board  (KSPCB), Bruhat Banagalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Karnataka High Court Legal  Services Committee. Speaking with City Express about the event, the spokesperson from Radio Active said, “In order to promote and encourage the public to recycle waste in their own premises, we have instituted awards in various categories — wastewise school championship award, wastewise college championship award, best wastewise community awards for Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and apartments, best wastewise business awards. These awards will motivate the public to adopt recycling and reusing their waste. This way they will be motivated,” he said. Besides the special awards have been instituted for public for their engagement with ragpickers, best organic recycling programme on campus, best dry waste recycling programme on campus.  In addition  six special awards  will be awarded to waste pickers in three categories - empowerment of fellow waste pickers, empowerment of their children and the best waste picker collective.Interested schools, colleges and corporates can apply before November 5.
