HYDERABAD: The first day of the Group I main examination went off peacefully in the state, barring some protests by Kakatiya University students in Hanamkonda. The police overpowered them and shifted them to police station.
According to official sources, the attendance was 69.45, which was more than the two previous GroupI exams conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC). Officials said the figure was quite encouraging because the aspirants took the examination despite disturbances in the Telangana region. The attendance percentage in 2007 when the last GroupI services examination was held was only 53.05 per cent and it was 38.09 per cent in 2005.

The examination was held at five centres- Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Warangal, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.

Students had trouble reaching the venues on account of lack of public transportation.

Buses were already off the roads as the RTC staff had joined the strike even earlier. Meanwhile, prohibitory orders were imposed by the Cyberabad police till October 3 at the four examination centres in its jurisdiction where the GroupI main examinations are behind held. Prohibitory orders are already in force in the seven exam centres in the Hyderabad police limits. Cyberabad police commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said assembly of five or more persons around 100 metres radius at the examination centres was prohibited.
