ANGUL: An uneasy calm prevailed at Raijharan village following a clash between the police and the villagers on Tuesday night. About 40 villagers were injured in the lathicharge, including serious injuries to four persons. The police were there to free seven officials of Monnet Ispat and Jindal Steel and Power Limited held hostage by the villagers.
The police later returned to the village again to rescue one of its officers and a woman constable. The villagers, however, have alleged police excesses and destruction of properties. SP Satyabrata Bhoi said that the villagers stoned the police party, which forced them to use batons to disperse them. Sources said the villagers waylaid the officials on way to Golagadia village over their demand for uniform land rates. The police have started patrolling the village and adjoining areas. ENS
