Amritsar: Medical students of the Government Medical College in Amritsar went on a hunger strike and forcibly closed down the out patient departments of state-run hospitals on Sunday.

Nearly 150 medical students went on the symbolic hunger strike to oppose the Centre's proposal to reserve 27 per cent of seats in elite educational institutions for OBCs.

Ankush Goel, president of the Amritsar Medical Students Association, said the students have initially started a symbolic hunger strike that would last 12 hours daily.

From Monday, the operation theaters of all government hospitals would be forced to close down, he said.

The students also condemned the police action against hundreds of striking medicos in New Delhi.

The students carried placards and banners with captions like "We are doctors, not criminals", "Professionalism is based on merit, not on caste" and "Abandon caste, respect merit".

A majority of the striking students are girls.
