BANGALORE: Close to 3,000 Pre-university (PU) college lecturers across the state abstained from work on Friday and gathered at Freedom Park in the city protesting the disparity in payscales among them and degree college teachers. The strike, organised by the Karnataka State PU College Lecturers’ Association and Coordination Committee, also drafted a memorandum outlining the various demands of the association. K Nagaraj, State Association’s Assistant Secretary, said that the strike was a stalemate as the government has refused the demands. “We presented a memorandum of our wage demands to the Deputy Commissioner. It was not accepted as they wanted us to wait for the Sixth Pay Commission, but it would be too late,” said Nagaraj. He admitted that colleges were shut as a result of the strike. “Yes, the classes were affected. But we can make up for lost classes by working through holidays,” he added. He also elucidated that now is the opportune time to put forward their demands to the State government. “We cannot possibly protest during evaluation time as that would have affected the results of the students,” he clarified. If the government failed to yield, then principals from across the state would also join the protest from the December 14, he claimed.
