New Delhi: The six-member delegation of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) that met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday has said it is confident of forming the next government.
PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim, who led the delegation, said Pakistan People's Party wanted to settle all disputes with India including Kashmir by negotiations in a peaceful manner and it was confident of forming the next government in the country.
Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf, who seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999, has announced to hold general elections in the country in 2007.
"Elected government works in a better way as its roots lie in the people. Moreover, democracy is the road to development," said Fahim, referring to the elections.
PPP's leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto recently met former Premier Nawaz Sharif in London, where they announced that they would return to Pakistan before the general elections in a bid to oust General Musharraf through the ballot box.
Benazir’s PPP and Sharif’s PML (N) and several other parties have formed the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) and are demanding free and fair polls in 2007, which they have said, cannot be possible as long as Musharraf is in power.
They are also opposed to Musharraf holding the posts of President and Chief of the Army Staff, and have said that retaining both posts is unconstitutional.
The delegation will also meet former Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Lal Krishna Advani.
"We are here on a goodwill mission. We want the relations to grow between India and Pakistan so that both can move forward with the help of each other," said Fahim.
