THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Adoor Prakash on Friday announced the Pollution Control Board (PCB) Awards for industrial units, hospitals, hotels, resorts and local self-governments. The awards will be distributed by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Kochi on June 5, on the occasion of World Environment Day.The awardees were selected after considering several factors such as pollution control, projects for energy conservation, social responsibility and environment protection. The judging panel consisted of PCB chairman K.Sajeevan, TKM College of Engineering faculty member S N Jyothi, MGU School of Environmental Studies director A P Thomas, Factories and Boilers Department director K Sasi, PCB member secretary P Molykutty and PCB chief environmental engineer S Sudhir Babu.From a total of 103 applications, the awards in the category of very big industries went to BPCL Kochi Refinery and Binani Zinc Limited in Ernakulam (Excellence), MRF Limited Kottayam (first), Hindustan Newsprint Ltd, Kottayam (second), NTPC, Kayamkulam, and BSES Kerala Power Ltd, Ernakulam (third).The awards in the category of big industries went to HIL Lifecare Limited, Thiruvananthapuram (excellence), Philips Carbon Black Limited, Ernakulam (first), Appollo Tyres, Thrissur and Peekay Steel Rolling Mills, Kozhikode (second) and Kerala Mineral and Metals Limited, Kollam (third).Among hotels, Spice Village, Thekkady, bagged the first prize, Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom and Marari Beach Resort, Alappuzha, shared the second prize and Lalith Resort and Spa, Kasargod and Travancore Heritage, Thiruvananthapuram, shared the third prize.The Attingal Municipality won the top spot among the local bodies while Chalakudy municipality and Irinjalakuda Municipality shared the second spot. Malappuram municipality and Ottapalam municipality shared the third place. Kozhikode Corporation bagged a special appreciation of the jury.
