New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's road show in Uttar Pradesh witnessed some unpleasant moments on Monday as police carried out a mild baton-charge to control people who wanted to shake hands with him.

Police used force to control members of the crowd who pushed and shoved to shake hands with Rahul as he went towards the barricades to meet people.

However, no one was injured in the police action.

Rahul's elite SPG bodyguards took him back to the dais and the situation was immediately brought under control.

"After 15 years, now they are asking for one more term for development. This is a false promise. They have ruled you by dividing you on the lines of caste and religion," PTI quoted Rahul Gandhi as saying.

Seeking to strike a chord with the voters, he said "elections may come and go, but I will be there with you to lead Uttar Pradesh into the path of development."

Earlier, Congress workers removed hoardings and banners put up to welcome Rahul in pursuance of an Election Commission directive.

Unlike his earlier meeting in Mehrauni where he did not speak about the agricultural crisis, Rahul said that farmers should be provided with proper irrigation facilities and this was the responsibility of the state government.

Mehrauni and other areas in Bundelkhand have experienced a farm crisis that reportedly led to suicides by a few farmers.

Rahul is currently touring parts of Uttar Pradesh to drum up support for Congress party ahead of state assembly elections.
