PMK disrupts Lok Sabha on Sri Lankan Tamils issue
PMK says Pranab Mukherjee's statement contradicts President's address.

New Delhi: The Sri Lankan Tamils issue continued to create uproar in the Lok Sabha for the second day on Thursday with United Progressive Allliance partner Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), demanding withdrawal of the statement of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the matter.

Raising the issue after Question Hour, M Ramdoss (PMK) said that Mukherjee's statement contradicts the views in the President's address which had spoken of the need for Sri Lanka government to stop military operations and safeguard interests of innocent Tamils.

Against it, Mukherjee's statement in which he virtually turned down demands for India's intervention to stop military offensive in Sri Lanka, was "value loaded, one-sided,.... against the LTTE and .....in favour of state-sponsored terrorism," Ramdoss alleged.

Dubbing Mukherjee's statement as "irresponsible", he said that the Minister should have consulted partners from Tamil Nadu before making it.

Making a strong plea for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, he said "we are not supporting any group in Sri Lanka. Our only worry is about innocent Tamils. It is a question of humanity. This Gandhian land should show it has a heart."

Wearing black shirts, PMK and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) members stormed the well of the House twice to protest the statement, copies of which they were waving. The first protest led to adjournment of the House soon after it assembled for the day.
