BHUBANESWAR: Under attack from various quarters over the alleged gangrape and attempt to murder of a Dalit girl at Pipili, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday said he was very concerned about the incident. Naveen’s statement came a day after the NCW blamed police for failing to lodge a timely FIR. “We are very much concerned about the victim,” the Chief Minister told mediapersons. Four suspects have so far been arrested and a judicial inquiry has been ordered into the incident, he added. Claiming that the girl has been provided the best treatment available in the State, Naveen said the Government is in touch with specialists at AIIMS, Delhi, for providing better medicare to the 19-year-old victim. At present, she is undergoing treatment in the ICU of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. While the incident took place on November 28, 2011, the police registered a case on January 9, 2012, after the intervention of the OHRC. The girl, who had sustained injury on her neck due to a strangulation bid, was not provided required treatment at three Government hospitals till the Orissa High Court intervened. The NCW, in a statement on Friday, stressed that medical evidence should be collected without any delay followed by immediate disciplinary action. DHARNA: Members of the Odisha Gana Samaj staged a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan demanding a CBI probe into the incident. Leaders and members of all non-BJD parties, civil societies, women organisations, intellectuals, youths and students joined the dharna. Their other demands include CBI probe into the alleged gangrape and murder of a girl at Chandanpur, dismissal of State Commission for Women Chairperson Jyoti Panigrahi and disciplinary action against the DIG (Central Range) for what they said gross violation of service conduct rules of the Government servants. A memorandum was submitted to Governor MC Bhandare.
