KOCHI: Noting that the common man would not be able to bear the frequent hike in petrol prices, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala has said that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his Cabinet colleagues would bring the issue to the notice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a meeting in New Delhi this week. While speaking at the commemoration meet of A L Jacob in connection with his 16th death anniversary on Sunday, Chennithala asked the Centre to rethink on the rights given to the petroleum companies for deciding the prices. However, Chennithala said the recent price hike was owing to the fluctuation in the price of crude oil in the international market. Noting that the state government’s decision to forgo tax on the recently increased petrol price was a good gesture, he said the government would be losing about `300 crore in this regard. No other state government had decided to forgo tax on petrol prices, he said. Delivering the keynote address, IUML leader Abdul Samad Samadani said that corruption, communalism and terrorism had impacted the politics. This trend would lead to apolitical situation in the country, he said. MLAs Hibi Eden and Dominic Presentation, former KPCC president C V Padmarajan, DCC president V J Paulose spoke at the function.
