A girl student of Haridwar-based Patanjali University was feared drowned in river Ganga on Tuesday at Devprayag in Uttarakhand's Tehri district while trying to save a friend, police said.

The incident happened in the afternoon when some students of the university were taking pictures along the banks of the Ganga, they said.

Suddenly a girl slipped off a rock and fell into the river. To save her, 21-year-old Urvashi jumped into the river but was swept away by strong currents of the water and was believed to have drowned, police said.

The girl hailed from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, they said adding efforts were on to trace Urvashi or her body.

The girl whom Urvashi tried to rescue was saved by the passers-by. The Patanjali University students had gone to Devprayag to take part in the "Bhumi pujan" of a Patanjali Seva Ashram, police said.
