VISAKHAPATNAM: Kandala Subrahmanyam alias KS Tilak, one of the first Parliamentarian of Independent India, was felicitated by the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, at a function held in New Delhi on Saturday, organised to observe the 60th anniversary of the Indian Parliament. The 92-year-old Tilak was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Vizianagaram constituency in 1952, on a Socialist Party ticket.A native of Visakhapatnam, born July 15, 1920, Tilak studied at Maharajah College and Benarus Hindu College and Raja Lakhamgonda Law college. Right from schooling, he was involved in several student agitations and served four months in prison during college days, in Vizianagaram. He shared his political career and public life with several giants including, Pattabhi Seetharamayya, Konda Venkatappaiah and Duggirala Gopala Krishnayya.He started his political career in Indian National Congress in 1939. He worked as secretary for Belgaum City Students’ Federation (1944-45) and joint secretary of Karnataka Provincial Students’ Congress. He was the member of Andhra Pradesh Congress (1945-46) and joint secretary of Visakhapatnam district Congress.Along with his uncle Kandala Sarveswara Sastry, Tilak took part in the salt satyagraha march from Vizianagaram to Visakhapatnam. He never compromised on raising his voice regarding peoples’ issues in Parliament. Though he was offered the position of governor, besides other prestigious posts, Tilak turned them down and preferred to ‘stay as a man of the masses’, in his words.
