New Delhi: Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit on Thursday said the peace process with India is suspended at present, adding that Kashmir was the "root cause" of mistrust between the two countries.
"I think at present the peace process is suspended...As far as I know there is no meeting scheduled between the two foreign secretaries yet," Basit said at a press conference in Delhi.
"Let's be realistic. It is the Jammu and Kashmir dispute that is the root cause of mutual distrust and other bilateral issues. Therefore, its fair and just resolution, as per the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, is imperative. Attempts to put it on the back burner will be counterproductive," he further said.
The envoy also ruled out the possibility of India's National Investigation Team (NIA) team's visit to the country for investigating the Pathankot terror attacks saying the probe more about cooperation rather than reciprocity.
"The whole investigation is about extending cooperation. If India is not ready, we can always wait," said Basit.
Basit's statement comes three days after CNN-IBN reported that Pakistan was unlikely to allow a team from the NIA to visit the country for investigation.
Reacting to Pakistan's stand, India said that the Pakistan JIT visit was on reciprocal basis and in accordance with existing legal provisions.
