Bhubaneswar: In a shocking case of corporal punishment, a class 6 student in Orissa was allegedly beaten to death by his teacher because he had not done his homework.
The teacher Dambarudhar Rana allegedly instructed the classmates 11-year-old Ajay Bagarti of St George High School in Bargarh district to beat him up as well.
Ajay's parents who are farmers complained to the school authorities, following which Rana was forced to apologise to him.
The incident occurred on January 29, following which the child was hospitalised.
But doctors could not save him and he died on February 13.
Ajay's death has sparked off outrage in the state, forcing the school to suspend the teacher. Rana has been absconding for the past one week.
"Case has been registered against the teacher and we are looking out for him," said Bargarh SDPO Bijay Kumar Dash.
District Collector of Bargarh has been put in charge of the investigation.
