A division bench of the AP High Court on Monday reserved its verdict on the question of conducting elections to local bodies in the state based on the existing provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act.
The bench heard a batch of writ petitions complaining against the failure of the government in holding elections to various local bodies, including panchayat and municipal bodies. The petitioners contended that the provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act in providing 34 percent reservation to Backward Classes was contrary to the 50 percent limit fixed by the Supreme court.
