CHENNAI: Stressing the need for concerted and sustained relief in Thane-affected areas, Indiya Jananayaka Katchi (IJK) founder TR Pachamuthu pointed out that one-time relief would not help rebuild the lives of the affected people. “Most of the cultivation in the cyclone-affected region comprises jackfruit, cashewnut and coconut, which takes atleast 7 to 8 years to start yielding. Therefore, the State should take initiatives to replant respective hybrid saplings and relief should recur until these saplings start giving their yield,” he said at a press conference. “Only this will help, as many had been making proposals to their wards at a time when their livelihood was destroyed by the cyclone”.Leading by example, the party chief said that he had decided to waive college fees for 328 students hailing from the cyclone-hit Cuddalore district, who were enrolled in the SRM group of educational institutions. They would complete their education in the course of the next 5 years and the entire drive would cost the institution Rs 7 crore.“We have decided to approach Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to hand over the certificate of fee exemption to these students with her consent,” Pachamuthu said.“Family politics should be put an end, otherwise youth will not be able to come into the mainstream politics, he said, advocating that provision of freebies would only demean the self-respect of the citizens of the State. The Koodankulam plant should start producing power so as to meet the electricity demand and to ensure the commissioning of such plants in future, he said.“At a time when technology is advancing every minute, apprehensions have no limits and this should not set a wrong precedent in future to stall other such proposed development projects,” Pachamuthu pointed out.
