CHENNAI: Varaaki, president of Indian Makkal Mandram, a social service organisation in Ekkattuthangal, has issued a legal notice to the Union Petroleum Ministry and the major oil companies to reduce the prices of petroleum products. The notice, issued by advocate N Raja Senthoor Pandian, wondered as to why the Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum Corporations steeply hiked the prices when, in fact, they earned huge profits in the past five years. The companies have been provided with crores of rupees as subsidy, Pandian pointed out.The advocate urged the Centre to form an appropriate scheme soon to ensure that the net profits of the companies were confined and the profits. “Failing which the Mandram will be constrained to seek judicial intervention in the interest of the public against illogical acts of the price increase implemented by the oil companies,” the notice added.
