Chennai: India-born Indra Nooyi, who beat insurmountable odds before getting to the top job at Pepsico, today hoped that Tata Group would bag the Jaguar-Land Rover deal and pave the way for future overseas deals by Indian firms.

"Pioneers always have trouble. I didn't have an easy sail either. So, let's just look at the Tata deal as a pioneering deal, let them go blaze past new grounds. The other deals will happen easily," she told reporters here.

Another homegrown Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra too is in the race for Land Rover and Jaguar - the British marquees of US carmaker Ford.

Ford is understood to have put off an announcement of the winner for the two brands to avoid alienating other suitors, who it needs to keep on the side in case talks with the favoured candidate fell through.

"Pioneers, people who do things first always run into trouble and they have to move barriers. They have to set an example. Once the Tata deal gets done, the next five deals will happen rapidly," felt Nooyi, who last year became the first woman to lead the US F&B giant.

Tatas are pioneers in their own right, having acquired Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus early this year. Corus includes the remnants of British Steel, a company that had tried to thwart Tatas' foray into steel making way back in 1907.

"So, let's look at it that way (Tatas paving the way for the others)," said Nooyi.
