THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kuriakose Elias Trust will set up International Chavara Cancer Research Institute (ICCRI), a hospital and palliative care centre, at Moozhi, Nedumangad, soon. A Community Living Project will also come up at Pappanamcode, said office-bearers of the Trust here on Wednesday. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will lay the foundation stone for the projects on the Pappanamcode campus on December 27 at 2.30 pm. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Trust patron Bishop Mar Mathew Arackal will attend the function. A cancer awareness seminar will be held at 1.30 pm. Former head of the Oncology Department of Kottayam Medical College Dr C S Madhu will lead the seminar. Travancore royal family head Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma will announce ‘Oncology-2012’, a conference to be held in the city in May 2012. Finance Minister K M Mani will announce ‘Healthy Child, Wealthy Nation’, a project of the Trust for the benefit of cancer-affected children of poor parents. An awareness programme will be launched by Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty and former Union Minister O Rajagopal will release ‘Cancer Care’, an ICCRI publication. The ICCRI aims to provide cancer treatment to the poor and needy, the Trust office-bearers said. The project will be implemented within two years. Syro Malabar Sabha Laity Commission secretary Adv V C Sebastian, Institute medical board director C S Madhu, Trust executive secretary K A Abraham and Lourdes Matha Care director Fr Sony Mundunadakkal attended the news conference.
