BANGALORE: Expressing concern over the increased incidence of alcoholism among youths, members in the Legislative Council urged the government to mull over imposing total prohibition in the state.Raising the issue, JD(S) member H C Neeravari appealed to the state government to consider the imposition of total prohibition. “Those falling prey to alcoholism have not only lost their health but also pushed their families to financial bankruptcy,” he said. He expressed apprehension that the government is promoting liquor as it not only fetches revenue but also brings “bribe money”.Strongly refuting the charges, Excise Minsiter M P Renukacharya informed the house that it was due to the stringent measues adopted by the government, revenue mobilisation has increased manifold. Those in the earlier government should explain why revenue from the excise department was low, the minister retorted. Senior Congress member M V Rajashekharan intervened and expressed concern over growing tendency of youths to consume liquor.
