“The joint statement is singularly unhelpful in achieving the objective of strategic stability and durable peace in the South Asian region. By failing to address key sources of tension and instability in the region, the statement aggravates an already tense situation,” Dawn News quoted from the Foreign Office statement.

The statement was issued hours after Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar, accused the US of "speaking India's language", saying it seems the "blood of Kashmiris" is "not at all important" to America. "It seems as though the blood of Kashmiris in not at all important to the US, and international laws relating to human rights do not apply to Kashmir," Nisar said, referring to the US State Department designating the Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist.

During Prime Minister Modi's recent visit to the US, where he held his bilateral meeting with Trump, India and the US vowed to strengthen cooperation against terror outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba and D-Company, while asking Pakistan to ensure that its soil is not used for terror strikes against other nations.

In a joint statement released after talks between Modi and Trump, the two nations called on Islamabad to "expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai, Pathankot, and other cross-border terrorist attacks perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups.

China has also mounted a strong defence of its “all-weather ally”, saying Pakistan was at the frontlines of the fight against terrorism. "China thinks that the international cooperation against terrorism should be enhanced and stepped up. The international community should give full recognition and affirmation to Pakistan's efforts in this regard," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters.
