A minor girl, who was allegedly married off to a lorry driver, was rescued by a team from the district Child Help Line on Tuesday. The 16-year-old girl was studying Class X in Mysore, Karnataka, sources said.
After her mother passed away a few years ago, her father, identified as Nataraj, abandoned her. She stayed with her grandmother Sakkamma. A month ago, her uncle Rajesh and aunt Chellam, residents of Odakkadu here, brought her to Tirupur along with them, assuring that they would help her. The couple ran a garment manufacturing unit in the district.
Later, the couple fixed her marriage with Selvam, a 29-year-old lorry driver from Salem. Two weeks ago, despite her objections, they conducted the marriage at KS Petta in Salem. On Sunday, the girl and Selvam were brought to her uncle’s house here. She tried to flee the house on Monday night. However, she was caught and brought back to the house early on Tuesday. The girl was then severely beaten up. Meanwhile, a neighbour, who got wind of what was happening, alerted the Tirupur Child Helpline.
Accompanied by personnel from the AWPS here, the Helpline staff, along with NGO members went to the house and rescued the girl and detained her relatives for an inquiry.
