THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mayor K Chandrika and her team updated Urban Affairs Minister P K Kunhalikutty on Wednesday regarding the various issues faced by the City Corporation, right from its paltry exchequer to the never-ending row in Vilappilsala over solid waste management. It was when the Minister and Department heads of Urban Affairs visited the Corporation, first time after the new Minister assumed charge, that the Corporation officials poured out their cup of woes.Efforts will be put in to resolve the existing stand-off between the Corporation and the Vilappil panchayat, Kunhalikutty assured them. The Mayor told the Minister about the huge amount pending with the State Government by way of the pension deposit of the employees. This would amount to Rs 25.35 crore. The Corporation’s high-level officials and Standing Committee Chairmen communicated the various needs of the local body, including the gargantuan amount which has to be remitted to the Corporation by various government offices, including the Legislative Assembly and Secretariat. The Vilappilsala issue and the land acquisition problems for the sewage plant at Muttathara were the other problems that were highlighted at the meeting. The  Minister has expressed interest to pay a visit to both the sites, Deputy Mayor Happykumar said after the meeting. Corporation officials made a presentation on the Vilappilsala plant and the various ongoing development activities there. The widespread transfers in the Corporation is creating big problems for the functioning of the local body, the officials told the Minister. The transfer of efficient and experienced officials to small Corporations like Thrissur and Kollam would do no good. The Corporation is also experiencing a shortage of expert hands in various fields. The absence of a Plan coordinator is seriously hampering the Plan activities, officials told the Minister. According to the Deputy Mayor, the Minister assured  them that he would look into all the problems and sort them out without much delay.
