New Delhi: Last year, the Delhi High Court had banned the plying of rickshaws in the Chandni Chowk area near the Red Fort. The HC had asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to decongest the area.
The HC had also asked for a plan on the scientific management of rickshaws in the city and after nearly 10 months of deliberating, the MCD has finally come up with a way to do the same.
The MCD is planning to use sensors to track unlicensed cycle rickshaws and augment revenue collection.
The new "rickshaw policy" announced at a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee by its Commissioner A K Nigam on Wednesday also pegs the limit of licences at 99,000 in all 12 zones with Shahadra (North) and Shahadra (South Zones) getting the maximum share of 18,000 each, followed by West Zone with 14,000.
According to News Aagency PTI, every new rickshaw would be equipped with a high-tech sensor chip to help profiling unlicensed rickshaws and increasing the civic body's revenue collection.
The scheme would be introduced among old rickshaws in a phased manner, Nigam was quoted by PTI as saying.
He added it would also ensure there was no duplication of licenses and only rickshaw pullers got licenses.
The MCD will also provide land for halting stations for rickshaws with facilities like drinking water and urinals.
