KOLLAM: The 58th birthday celebrations of Mata Amrithanandamayi will get underway on September 27 on the Amritapuri campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham near here. The function will commence with a talk at 7.45 a.m. by Swami Amritaswarupananda, vice-chairman of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. This will be followed by Sri Padapuja. At 9 a m, MataAmritanandamayi will deliver a  satsang to the audience. This will be followed by the launches of a series of several initiatives in areas of health, education, environment and charities. One of the distressing health trends which  has emerged in Kerala is the surge in the number of aged people who are sick and disabled, but have nobody from the family to take care of them while at home. This alarming social phenomenon has prompted Mata Amritanandamayi Math to launch a pioneering initiative to create a cadre of 10,000 home nurses in Kerala, of which 1000 persons will undergo professional training immediately. The Home Nurse Initiative will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan. The training of home nurses will be imparted by the Amrita network of medical institutions. This will be a six-month free training programme inclusive of stay and food, with a stipend to each trainee. Another initiative is a pioneering online education programme ‘Free all-India Tuition Programme’ for college students, based on a market research conducted in Kerala. The online programme is supported by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development. Initially, the pilot programme will be launched in Kerala and will later be extended to other states. The free tuition programme will be transmitted through Amrita University’s award-winning e-Learning platform, A-VIEW (Amrita Virtual Interactive E-Learning World), developed by Amrita University. The initiative will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Vilasrao Deshmukh.  The all-India Amala Bharatam campaign launched by Mata Amritanandamayi Math involving students and volunteers from Amrita institutions and Mata Amritanandamayi Math to undertake cleaning works of public garbage and waste bins has completed one year. As part of the anniversary celebrations which will coincide with the 58th birthday of Amma, hundreds of volunteers will take out a cycle rally from Kollam to Amritapuri on September 26 at 9 a.m. The rally is aimed at creating greater awareness about Amala Bharatam campaign and generate greater public participation on matters relating to public hygiene, sanitation, cleanliness, waste management through proper segregation and disposal procedures at the level of each household. The rally which will cover 41 km will be flagged off by Kollam Mayor Prasanna Earnest and inaugurated by District Collector P G Thomas. Those participating in the cycle rally will en route perform a street play on ‘Cleanliness and Hygiene’ at SN Trust School, Karunagappally, where over 1000 students will be present.
