Kolkata: Even as Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee's fast entered the 22nd day on Monday, the leader said she would not end her fast till the state government returns the "forcibly acquired" land to the farmers.
Despite her deteriorating condition, Mamata refused to be treated by doctors sent by the state government. Trinamool Congress leader and physician Nirmal Majhi said, "Her pulse rate is falling and she is suffering from breathing problems."
Mamata terms the CPM-led state government's move to acquire of 954 acres of farm land to set up the Tata Motors project in Singur as "anti-farmer and anti-poor".
On Sunday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had sent a message to the Trinamool leader, expressing concern about her health and asking her to join talks with the government by ending her fast.
Mamata said she wouldn't break her fast or consider a dialogue until there was a response from the state government about her demand which also included lifting prohibitory orders which are in force in Singur.
"Prime Minister has not given anything in writing. We have nothing to respond," Trinamool MP Mukul Roy said.
The Opposition also seems to be concerned about Mamata's well-being. BJP president Rajnath Singh is to meet Mamata at the dharna site. Apart from expressing solidarity with her agitation, Singh is also expected to ask the Mamata of how the BJP could help her.
Earlier on December 4 BJP president's sharing platform with fasting Banerjee had led to a setback in her relations with Congress which had been warming up of late.
